Tensions have escalated in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) after six civilians were reportedly killed in firing by Pakistani security forces during clashes in Rawalakot on Tuesday.

The latest violence erupted near the new bus terminal of the city, where security personnel purportedly opened fire on protesters, resulting in casualties. The deceased have been identified as Zahid Mughal, Zafar Mughal, Arsalan Akbar, Wajid Hayat and other individuals. Wajid Hayat allegedly died at the Matial Mira bus terminal.

The latest violence comes amid growing resentment against Islamabad in the region and has further intensified the volatile situation.

PoK Protest Reaches White House

Just a day before the violence, members of the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir community living in the US gathered outside the White House in Washington, demanding the international community's attention to the rapidly worsening humanitarian crisis in the region.

Nearly 100 people, women, children and leaders from the communities attended the rally, demanding the removal of Pakistani troops from the civil population of PoK, alleging misuse of excessive force by the security forces against unarmed people.

Demonstrators also called attention to an extended internet blockade, which they allege has left around four million people cut off from the world. They further appealed to the international community for intervention and sought humanitarian assistance, with some demonstrators also urging India to help protect civilian lives.

The Residents have also demanded that the Line of Control (LoC) be opened through Poonch and Doda sectors to allow humanitarian aid to reach the affected residents.

MEA Reacts To Ongoing POJK Protest

The Ministry of External Affairs on Tuesday issued a statement criticising the recent protests in Pakistan, saying the clashes were due to “systematic exploitation.”

“The ongoing protests in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir are a direct consequence of Pakistan's decades-long systemic exploitation, denial of fundamental rights, and administrative oppression in the territories under its illegal and forcible occupation. Instead of addressing the legitimate grievances of the local population, the Pakistani administration has resorted to excessive police brutality," said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.
