PoK Protests: Pakistani security forces have reportedly opened fire on protesters in Rawalakot, leaving at least two people dead and more than 50 injured. The incident comes after Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) witnessed fresh unrest on Friday, with demonstrators accusing the government of failing to address their long-standing demands.

Pakistani Forces Open Fire On Protesters

The violence broke out when the Pakistan Army arrived to clear the route for a food supply convoy. Protesters, who had been staging demonstrations against the Pakistan government, had blocked the road as part of their agitation. The situation escalated when security forces allegedly opened fire to clear the route, resulting in casualties and injuries.

Following the firing, protests across PoK have intensified, with more people joining demonstrations against the authorities. The protests have been ongoing since June 10, with residents raising concerns over governance, economic hardships, and political issues. Earlier, the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) had placed 38 demands before the Pakistan government and warned of stronger protests if their concerns were not addressed.

The group has been leading the demonstrations in PoK, demanding reforms and relief measures for residents. One of the key demands is the removal of 12 reserved assembly seats meant for Kashmiri refugees settled in Pakistan. Protesters argue that these seats allow Islamabad to maintain influence over PoK’s political affairs.

Protesters Demand Relief On Economy, Power Projects

The demonstrators have also demanded a complete review of hydropower projects in the region, reduction in rising inflation, and improved access to essential commodities. They have accused authorities of ignoring the economic struggles faced by people in PoK. The latest clashes have further deepened tensions between protesters and Pakistan’s authorities, with the situation remaining volatile in several parts of the region.
