'Doomsday Fish' Sighting In Mexico Beach

The video was first posted by Monica Pittenger on Instagram on February 28. In the clip, the doomsday fish can be seen lying on the beach with people standing nearby watching them. Monica said the fish was “flashing” and looked very bright. She mentioned that her sister could not bear seeing the fish in pain and helped the fish move back toward the sea.

Sharing the video on Instagram, Monica wrote, “POV: You came to Cabo for the beach… and ended up rescuing a sea legend. My sister, Katie, helped an oarfish, a deep-sea giant most people never see make it back home. I was nervous because I had no idea what it was (or if it could sting), but she didn’t hesitate… she helped save two of them.

About 'Doomsday Fish'

The sighting has sparked curiosity as this deep-sea fish rarely comes close to the ocean’s surface. Doomsday fish has a long, ribbon-shaped body and shiny silver scales. It can grow more than 30 feet long and usually lives very deep in the ocean.

Why Is It Called Doomsday Fish?

It is called “doomsday fish” due to an old belief that these fish appear before natural disasters.  In Japanese folklore, seeing oarfish is sometimes linked to earthquakes or tsunamis. However, scientists believe that there is no proof that its appearances are connected to disasters.

Netizens React To Viral Video

As the video went viral, netizens engaged in discussion whether the doomsday fish signalled occurrence of any major event or destruction. Their curiosities increased as they were surprised to see not just one but two of these rare fish.

A user wrote, “To see two, I’d venture to say something going on w tectonic plates or humans doing some sick mass destruction explosions far away, deep in the ocean. For two at once?? Brave women to touch them & set them back out into the seas where they belong.”
