SCO Summit 2025 Live Updates: PM Modi Concludes Productive China Visit, Says India Stood Firm On Global Issues

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday wrapped up his visit to China after attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, where he held wide-ranging discussions with global leaders and outlined India’s position on key issues.

“Concluding a productive visit to China, where I attended the SCO Summit and interacted with various world leaders. Also emphasised India’s stand on key global issues. Thankful to President Xi Jinping, the Chinese government and people for the successful organisation of this Summit,” the Prime Minister posted on X (formerly Twitter).

After attending the SCO Summit proceedings in Tianjin, PM Modi revealed on social media that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin shared the same Hongqi car to reach the venue of their bilateral meeting. “After the proceedings at the SCO Summit venue, President Putin and I travelled together to the venue of our bilateral meeting. Conversations with him are always insightful,” PM Modi posted on X.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member states, in their joint declaration on Monday, reaffirmed their commitment to combating terrorism, separatism and extremism, while stressing that such groups must not be used for mercenary purposes.

"The Member States, while reaffirming their firm commitment to the fight against terrorism, separatism, and extremism, stress the inadmissibility of attempts to use terrorist, separatist and extremist groups for mercenary purposes. They recognise the leading role of sovereign States and their competent authorities in countering terrorist and extremist threats. The Member States strongly condemn terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, stress that double standards in the fight against terrorism are unacceptable, and call on the international community to combat terrorism, including cross-border movement of terrorists," reads the declaration. "The Member States strongly condemned the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on 22 April 2025. They expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the dead and the wounded. They further stated that perpetrators, organisers and sponsors of such attacks must be brought to justice," it added

 Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday underlined the importance of connectivity built on mutual trust and respect for sovereignty, while addressing the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Members Session in Tianjin.

"We have to say clearly and unanimously that no double standards are acceptable on terrorism. This attack was an open challenge to every country and person who believes in humanity. In such a situation, it is natural to raise the question of whether the open support of terrorism by some countries can be acceptable to us. We have to unanimously oppose terrorism in every form and colour. This is our duty towards humanity..." PM Modi added.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, addressing the SCO Members Session in Tianjin on Monday, underlined the grouping’s role in promoting security, cooperation, and regional stability. Xi highlighted that member states had “steadily promoted law enforcement and security cooperation, properly managed and settled differences, unequivocally opposed external interference, and maintained peace and stability in the region.”

He further stressed the importance of the Belt and Road initiative, calling it the first of its kind in fostering connectivity. “We always stand on the side of international fairness and justice, champion inclusiveness and mutual learning between civilizations, and oppose hegemonism and power politics,” Xi said, setting the tone for the SCO’s deliberations.

Both leaders are expected to discuss defence cooperation, energy trade, and strategic partnerships, particularly amid rising pressure from Washington over India’s continued imports of Russian crude oil.

On the sidelines of the Tianjin gathering, Modi will hold talks with President Putin. The two leaders are expected to discuss improving strategic cooperation, defense partnerships, and existing energy ties. India’s Russian oil imports will be a key focus of their discussion. This meeting takes place amid increased pressure from Washington, which has raised tariffs on Indian goods due to India's refusal to cut back on Russian crude purchases.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has confirmed that Prime Minister Modi will address the plenary session on Monday morning, where he is expected to present India’s approach to fostering regional cooperation under the SCO framework. PM Modi is likely to stress on counterterrorism, connectivity, energy security, and balanced trade partnerships within the grouping. Following his address, the Prime Minister will hold bilateral discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin before returning to India later in the day.
