Authorities originally confirmed 12 people had died in the blaze but changed the figure to 11 on Friday morning. According to Cadena Ser radio station, Andalusia's regional leader Juan Manuel Moreno said that around 19 people remain missing, with search efforts underway.
“Our hearts are heavy, and we are devastated by grief," Moreno wrote on X.
How Did The Wildfire Start?
The wildfire started in a small village on the outskirts of the Sierra de los Filabres mountains, though officials are investigating the precise cause. However, firefighters said a fallen power cable is thought to be responsible for the incident, which subsequently spread into forests surrounding the area.
Emergency services confirmed the wildfire led to the closing of some roads and resulted in approximately 1,000 people being evacuated.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and assured support for those affected by the disaster.
