If you have been scrolling through social media lately, you might have noticed people talking about the “Thailand tattoo”. The trend is getting a lot of attention, with people sharing their experiences and posting photos of it online. It has been regarded as one of the most talked-about travel “souvenirs” of the year.
What Is Thailand Tattoo?
While “Thailand tattoo” might sound like something cool to get while visiting the country, it is not a real tattoo. In fact, it is a burn scar that many travellers get by accident, usually on the leg. This happens from touching a hot scooter exhaust pipe. Scooters are a popular way to get around in Thailand, especially in destinations like Phuket, Koh Samui, Chiang Mai, and Pai. Tourists easily rent them to get around and it’s also quite cheap.
However, most people don’t realise that the exhaust pipe gets very hot within minutes. It stays hot even after the bike is off. So if your leg accidentally touches it, you will get a nasty burn. These burns usually happen on the calf, inner leg, or ankle. At first, it stings sharply and then turns red, forming a blister. Once healed, it leaves a scar, what people have now described as “Thailand tattoo.”
Why It Is Getting Viral?
A user shared the video on Instagram, showing people with bandaids on their legs and wrote, “The “Thailand Tattoo” is the one souvenir I’m definitely skipping this trip. It’s all fun and games in Southeast Asia until you see the "bandage fashion" trending on every corner. Turns out, renting a motorbike here isn't as easy as it looks!”
Several other travellers have posted their scars online as a funny warning for others. While it may sound amusing, the burn is real and painful, and in hot, humid weather, it can get infected.
