United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday appeared to mistakenly refer to Iran as the “Islamic Republic of Japan.” The mix-up happened while he was discussing Iran's missile attack on a US aircraft carrier at the NATO summit. The remarks quickly went viral on social media, with many users sharing clips of the moment.

Trump’s Iran And Japan Mix-Up

While speaking at the summit held in Ankara, Turkey, Trump said, “We had 111 missiles shot by the Islamic Republic of Japan. They shot our aircraft carrier (USS Abraham Lincoln) over one hour and every one of them was knocked down.” Trump seemed to confuse Iran with Japan, officially called the Islamic Republic of Iran. During the same speech, Trump suggested that the US could launch more strikes on Iran if needed as fresh tensions brew between both countries.

Trump Warns Of More Strikes On Iran

Earlier in the day, Trump threatened to launch strikes on Iran "again tonight", hours after he declared that the interim peace agreement with Iran "is over", saying that he did not want any deal with Tehran. "I'll give a little warning: We're going to hit them hard tonight," Trump told reporters at the NATO summit in Turkey, as reported by Reuters.

Trump also accused Iran of delaying a possible agreement and spoke about Kharg Island. “We attacked Kharg Island last night, and we knocked out a piece. I said, ‘don’t touch the oil’ because maybe we’ll take over Kharg Island. We may take over Kharg Island. There’s not a thing they can do about it… normally, I’m not that way, but they really deserve it," he added.

Trump's threatening remarks came after Iran carried out attacks on US bases in Bahrain and Kuwait, in retaliation for the overnight strikes by the US. Apart from strikes, the US also revoked a licence allowing Iran to sell oil.
