The Turkish Parliament witnessed chaotic scenes on Wednesday as heated arguments escalated into physical altercations between ruling party members and the opposition. The turmoil became so severe that the Speaker was forced to suspend the session for 15 minutes to restore order. The primary cause of the conflict was a recent cabinet reshuffle, specifically the appointment of the new Justice Minister.
The confrontation began when opposition MPs attempted to block Akin Gurlek—newly appointed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan—from taking his official oath. The opposition has raised serious concerns regarding Gurlek's nomination to the powerful Justice Ministry, alleging political bias and questioning the legitimacy of his appointment.
The situation turned violent as Akin Gurlek approached the podium to be sworn in. Opposition lawmakers surrounded the area to prevent him from taking the oath, prompting members of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) to rush forward to protect the nominee. This resulted in a physical scuffle and a state of total disorder on the parliamentary floor. Following the 15-minute suspension, the meeting resumed, and Gurlek eventually took his oath amidst continued protests from the opposition.
Akin Gurlek previously served as Istanbul's Chief Public Prosecutor. During his tenure, he handled several high-profile cases involving members of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP).
This legislative clash occurs against the backdrop of a broader cabinet reshuffle by President Erdogan, which also included appointing Mustafa Ciftci, the Governor of Erzurum Province, as the new Interior Minister. These changes are taking place alongside a massive anti-corruption campaign that has targeted municipalities governed by opposition parties. In recent years, hundreds of local officials linked to the CHP have been detained.

Among the most prominent figures targeted is Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who is widely regarded as Erdogan’s primary political rival. Imamoglu was arrested last year on charges related to corruption and organised crime. In November, Gurlek filed a massive indictment against Imamoglu, alleging 142 separate offenses. Prosecutors have sought a combined prison sentence exceeding 2,000 years, a move that has drawn significant criticism both domestically and internationally.
According to the Los Angeles Times, no official explanation was provided for the cabinet reshuffle that took place on Wednesday. However, the official government gazette stated that the outgoing ministers had "requested to be relieved" of their duties.
These new appointments come at a critical juncture for Turkey. The nation is currently debating potential constitutional reforms and pursuing a peace initiative with the militant Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), aimed at resolving a conflict that has spanned decades. It is expected that the Turkish Parliament will pass the necessary reforms to support this ongoing peace process.
