The Vatican has long been cloaked in secrecy, with its Apostolic Archives holding more than 80 kilometres of historical documents that have remained largely inaccessible to the public. Now, a renewed wave of interest from researchers and scientists is pushing for transparency, specifically on the subject of UFOs and paranormal phenomena hidden within these hallowed halls.
Fueling this push for disclosure are the explosive claims made on July 26, 2023, by former US intelligence officer David Grusch. He alleged that the Vatican played a significant role in a decades-long extraterrestrial cover-up. According to Grusch, during the era of Mussolini, a UFO crash in Italy led to the recovery of alien technology, which Pope Pius XII reportedly helped transfer to the United States. These allegations suggest that the Vatican collaborated with the US government in concealing key information about extraterrestrial encounters.
Filmmaker Demands Transparency
British UFO researcher and filmmaker Mark Christopher Lee has now publicly urged the Holy See to declassify what he believes to be "hundreds" of UFO-related documents hidden in its vast underground archive. Following the recent death of Pope Francis, Lee is appealing to the incoming Pope to take a bold step toward transparency.
"If the Church is truly committed to spiritual truth and human enlightenment," Lee told MailOnline, "then it must no longer suppress information that could fundamentally reshape our understanding of our place in the cosmos."

Miracles Or UFO Encounters?
Professor Diana Walsh Pasulka, a religious scholar at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, supports the idea that the Vatican archives may contain numerous unexplained phenomena, some historically described as miracles. She cites records of nuns witnessing "luminous orbs" entering their cells or even accounts of flying buildings. Pasulka believes these could be interpreted as early UFO sightings, but says many such documents remain ignored as the Vatican prioritises digitising conventional religious texts.
Vatican's Uneasy History With UFO Discourse
Prominent Mexican ufologist Jaime Maussan also weighed in, reflecting on the evolving attitude of the Vatican toward extraterrestrial life. He pointed out how Pope John Paul II allowed discussions on UFOs and even permitted theologian Corrado Balducci to speak publicly about alien life—an unprecedented move at the time. Successors like Benedict XVI continued this openness. However, under Pope Francis, Maussan claims, interest in the subject waned, especially from Vatican Observatory officials.
