US-Iran War: As the war enters its second month, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has asked Army Chief of Staff General Randy George to step down and retire with immediate effect, the Pentagon announced on Thursday without giving a reason for the departure amid the United States’ ongoing conflict with Iran.

The move represents a major leadership transition as the administration seeks a commander who "will implement President Donald Trump and Hegseth's vision for the Army."

"General Randy A. George will be retiring from his position as the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army effective immediately,"Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell confirmed in a statement.

Parnell expressed the Department of War's gratitude for the General's "decades of service to our nation" and extended best wishes for his future.

"The Department of Defence is grateful for General George's decades of service to our nation. We wish him well in his retirement."

Who is General Randy George?

General George has served as 41st Army Chief of Staff since August 2023 under the Joe Biden administration, a role traditionally held for four years.

A West Point Military Academy graduate and infantry officer, George served in the first Gulf War as well as in Iraq and Afghanistan. He also acted as Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin's top military aide from 2021 to 2022 during the Joe Biden administration, before assuming senior leadership roles within the Army.

George survived the initial round of firings under the Trump administration in February 2025, when Hegseth dismissed top military leaders, including Admiral Lisa Franchetti, the Navy's highest-ranking uniformed officer, and General Jim Slife, the Air Force’s second-in-command. Trump also removed General Charles "CQ" Brown Jr as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Since then, more than a dozen senior generals and admirals have either retired early or been removed from their positions. Among these departures was George's deputy, General James Mingus, who served as vice chief of staff of the Army for less than two years.

At the same time, Pentagon officials have not provided a reason for George's departure, which comes almost five weeks into US-Israel military action in Iran and with no clear timeline from President Donald Trump on when the war may end.

Who will take over?

General Christopher LaNeve will assume the role of acting Army Chief of Staff, a Pentagon official said. LaNeve was serving as Hegseth's top military aide when Trump suddenly nominated him to be the Army's vice chief of staff last October. It is a meteoric rise for an officer who was only a two-star general two years ago.
