Amid growing uncertainty over a peace agreement with the United States, Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has described Tehran as a “superpower.” He stated that the country has strengthened itself after facing pressure from the US and Israel and urged everyone to stay united.
Mojtaba Alleges US-Israel Plot To Break Iran
According to Iranian State TV reports, Mojtaba has urged members of Parliament to act with confidence and unity. In his message, marking the anniversary of Iran’s national legislature, Mojtaba warned that Iran’s enemies are now trying to create internal divisions instead of engaging in direct conflict. He stated that they want to weaken the country by creating unrest and division.
“The enemy's blind plan, after the imposed war, the economic pressure, and the political and propaganda siege, is to create divisions and disintegration to compensate for military defeats and bring the nation to its knees,” Mojtaba reportedly said. Meanwhile, a report by Axios, suggests that US and Iranian negotiators have reached a tentative 60-day agreement to extend a fragile ceasefire and open the way for formal talks on Iran’s nuclear programme.
Have Iran And US Reached A Deal?
According to the report, citing unnamed US officials, the deal still needs final approval from US President Donald Trump and acceptance from Iran. The agreement aims to bring both sides back to the negotiating table to ease tensions in the Middle East. “The president relayed to the mediators that he wants a couple of days to think about it,” a US official told Axios.
The proposals of the draft MoU reportedly include unrestricted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, removal of mines within 30 days, and a gradual lifting of the US naval blockade. It also proposes sanctions waivers allowing Iran to sell oil and receive humanitarian aid. The draft further says Iran will commit not to pursue nuclear weapons. However, both sides will begin talks on Iran’s enriched uranium and nuclear enrichment programme. The US is also expected to discuss sanctions relief and unfreezing Iranian assets.
According to several Iranian news outlets, Mojtaba has also not accepted any memorandum of understanding with the US. This is also seen as a major reason behind the delay in reaching a peace agreement between Washington and Tehran.
