The US and Iran have digitally signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), paving the way for peace that ruined global economies in the past three months. According to the agreement signed by US President Donald Trump and his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian, both sides agreed to open the Strait of Hormuz.
Why India Has Every Reason To Cheer Iran-US Peace Deal
For India, the biggest gains from the Iran-US peace deal are cheaper oil, safer shipping through Hormuz, lower inflation, stronger trade, and renewed opportunities in Iran through Chabahar. However, there is a catch. The deal is still an interim agreement with a 60-day negotiation window. Major issues, including Iran's nuclear programme and long-term sanctions relief, remain unresolved. If talks collapse, oil prices and regional tensions could rise again.
India could be one of the biggest economic beneficiaries if the US-Iran peace deal holds. Here are the key advantages:
1. Cheaper Crude Oil
India imports around 85 per cent of its crude oil needs. The deal is expected to bring more Iranian oil back into global markets and reduce the "war premium" in oil prices. Brent crude has already fallen after the agreement was announced. This means lower fuel import bill for India, reduced pressure on petrol and diesel prices, lower inflation and ultimately stronger rupee.
2. Strait Of Hormuz Reopens
The agreement calls for restoring normal traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy routes. A large share of India's crude oil, LNG, and LPG imports pass through this chokepoint. This will ease LPG shortage in India. Notably, India has increased the prices of domestic and commercial cylinders. It may be possible the latest development could ease prices.
3. Boost For Trade And Exports
The conflict had increased shipping costs and caused delays in cargo movement. With regional tensions easing, Indian exporters could see improved competitiveness. Sectors like textiles, engineering goods, pharmaceuticals, auto components, and gems and jewellery will benefit the most.
4. Chabahar Port Opportunity
If sanctions on Iran are relaxed further, India could gain greater access to Iran through the strategically important Chabahar Port, which provides connectivity to Afghanistan and Central Asia while bypassing Pakistan.
5. Lower Inflation And Better Economic Growth
Every sustained fall in crude prices reduces India's import bill significantly and eases inflationary pressures. Lower energy costs help businesses and consumers alike.
6. Stronger Stock Market Sentiment
Historically, falling oil prices are positive for India because corporate costs decline, government finances improve and foreign investors gain confidence.
