Iran may soon need to engage at a new front in the ongoing war with the United States and Israel, as reports suggest pro-American Kurdish separatists in Iraq are preparing for a possible incursion in Iranian territory.

According to a report by The Guardian, citing a US official with knowledge of discussions between the US and Kurdish officials, Washington was ready to extend aerial support to the Kurdish separatists if they crossed the border to Iran from Iraq.

The report also cited an Israeli military spokesperson, claiming that their air force is targeting western Iran heavily so as to degrade Iranian capabilities up to Tehran.

Iran targets Kurdish groups

The reports are crucial, especially as Iran has warned the Kurdish separatist groups against joining the widened conflict.

Iran, in fact, launched a pre-emptive strike against the separatist groups. On Thursday, Iran said that it had launched strikes against Kurdish groups in Iraq who are "opposed to the revolution."

Kurdish groups united, CIA arms them 

Although the United States has officially refuted the reports of aiding an incursion into Iran. In a Wednesday briefing, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt called such reports claiming Trump's approval as "completely false."

However, another report by The New York Times, cited people familiar with the US efforts regarding Kurds, stated that the CIA had, before the current war, given arms to small Kurdish separatist groups, as part of a covert program to destabilise Iran.

The US media had reported that earlier this week, Trump had called two leaders of the Kurdish factions, offering to support them if they rose against the Iranian regime.

The deliberations are likely to have been brewing for months, as two weeks ago, the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (KDPI)-led five rival Kurdish factions formed a coalition with a goal to overthrow the Islamic Republic regime in Tehran.

There are also reports of clashes between the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and the Kurdish separatists in January. The covert operations to strengthen the Kurds were likely initiated by the West after the 8-day war between Israel and Iran in Jul last year.
