The United States’ dramatic military operation in Venezuela, including the capture of President Nicolas Maduro, is being defended by Vice President JD Vance as a strategic move with multiple long‑term benefits for Washington. In interviews and media appearances, Vance portrayed the mission not as unlawful aggression but as a necessary action with economic, diplomatic and security advantages for the US and its allies. 

Vance has repeatedly stressed that one of the key outcomes of US involvement in Venezuela is control over the country’s vast oil resources, which are among the largest in the world. In an interview on Fox News, he said Venezuela will only be allowed to sell its oil if those sales “serve America’s national interest,” signalling that energy policy will be shaped to benefit US strategic goals.

This coincides with official White House plans to control Venezuelan oil sales “indefinitely,” including the marketing of millions of barrels of crude recently seized from Venezuelan stockpiles and tankers. American energy companies are expected to play a major role in rebuilding and expanding Venezuela’s production infrastructure.

Diplomatic And International Influence

Beyond energy, Vance and other US officials argue that Washington’s current leverage over interim Venezuelan authorities strengthens its hand in broader diplomatic arenas. The White House has said it now has “maximum leverage” to shape Venezuela’s political and economic transition, positioning the US as the dominant external actor in the country.

Controlling when and how Venezuelan oil enters global markets allows the US to influence other nations’ economic decisions without resorting to direct conflict, a form of economic pressure that can be more sustainable than military engagement alone.

Demonstrating Military Strength

Vance has also framed the operation as a demonstration of US military capability and deterrence. He argues that showcasing American force sends a clear signal to rivals that the US will protect its interests in the Western Hemisphere. This, he says, reinforces US leadership in a region where geopolitical competition, especially from Russia and China, has been increasing.
