Maharashtra: Alcohol prices in Maharashtra have gone up following the state government’s decision to hike excise duties under a newly revised liquor policy. Announced by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the policy aims to generate an additional Rs 14,000 crore annually and bring greater transparency to the state’s liquor market.

Under the new rules, the excise duty on Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) has been increased from three times to 4.5 times the manufacturing cost, with a cap of Rs 260 per bulk litre. Excise duty on country liquor has also been raised from Rs 180 to Rs 205 per proof litre.

Updated Minimum Retail Prices (180 ml bottles):

  • Country Liquor: Rs 80
  • Maharashtra Made Liquor (MML): Rs 148
  • IMFL: Rs 205
  • Premium Foreign Liquor: Rs 360

Govt Introduces Maharashtra Made Liquor (MML)

A key feature of the revised policy is the introduction of a new liquor category called Maharashtra Made Liquor (MML). This will include grain-based spirits manufactured by local producers, aimed at promoting regional industries and boosting local production.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office, the policy revamp is based on a comprehensive study of excise structures in other states. It focuses on improving revenue generation, tightening regulations, reducing tax evasion, and curbing the illegal liquor trade.
