A 32-year-old man from Bihar was arrested by the Mumbai Crime Branch for posing as an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer and enjoying the facilities that come with the uniform. The man was caught during his stay at the Customs department’s government guest house in Bandra East. He has been identified as Chandramohan Prasad Rambali Singh from Bihar’s Vaishali district.

For the stay, the man was helped by a contact in the civil services, said officials as per a Hindustan Times report. Things took a turn when Singh’s car with a “Government of India” plate was noticed by patrolling officers in Malad. The scam was busted on June 28 when constable Laxman Bagave and inspector Balasaheb Raut received a tip-off. Acting on the information the officials stopped the vehicle. On being interrogated, Singh pulled out his ID card identifying him as an “Assistant Director (Security) with the Ministry of Home Affairs.

“We suspected the ID was fake. It had too many inconsistencies,” said a senior official, as per the report. The man was then taken to the Dahisar Crime Branch office for questioning.

During the interrogation, Singh revealed that he wanted to become an IAS officer but could not crack the exam. With pressure from family members and relatives, he decided to fake it. “He told people in his village that he too had become an IAS officer, just to save face,” the officer said.

The man was booked under sections 204 (personating a public servant), 336(2) (forgery) and 336(3) (making a false document), and 340 (using a forged document as genuine) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and was remanded in police custody till July 3.
