Who Is Devendra Fadnavis
Devendra Gangadharrao Fadnavis is a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, who served as the 18th Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 2014 to 2019. He became the second youngest Chief Minister of the state at the age of 44.
Fadnavis was born on July 22, 1970, to Gangadharrao and Sarita Fadnavis. He graduated in law and completed a diploma in Business Management and Project Management from Germany's Dahlam School of Education in 1998. In 2006, he married Amrita Fadnavis, and the couple has one daughter.
Fadnavis’ Political Journey
Fadnavis's political journey began with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in the early 1990s. In 1992, Fadnavis won his first municipal election from the Ram Nagar ward in Nagpur and became the youngest corporator at the age of 22.
In 1997, Fadnavis became the youngest Mayor of Nagpur and the second youngest Mayor in India. He served as a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from 1999 to 2004, winning three consecutive terms.
In 2001, Fadnavis was appointed as the National Vice President of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM). In 2010, he became the General Secretary of the BJP's Maharashtra unit and was elected as the State President in 2013.
In 2019, he was re-elected from the Nagpur South West Assembly seat. Fadnavis resigned from the post of Chief Minister after a failed alliance with NCP leader Ajit Pawar, when the coalition broke down within 80 hours. Later, the BJP formed a government with Eknath Shinde, with Ajit Pawar joining the alliance, and Fadnavis took the role of Deputy Chief Minister in this coalition government.
Architect Of BJP’s Victory In 2024 Maharashtra Assembly Polls
"Do not settle your home on my shores when you see my water recede, for I am the ocean, and I will surely return," this is what BJP firebrand leader Devendra Fadnavis said after the 2019 poll snub. The warning to Uddhav Thackeray was something that needed to be taken seriously, as Fadnavis demonstrated by significantly weakening the political presence of the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi in the state.
Fadnavis played a crucial role in splitting the Shiv Sena and supporting Eknath Shinde’s faction. Furthermore, he accepted the Deputy CM position to clear the way for Shinde, showing that the BJP was not driven by a hunger for power.
Under Fadnavis's leadership, the BJP achieved its best-ever performance in Maharashtra, securing 132 seats with an impressive 85 per cent strike rate, just six months later. He has also reclaimed the Chief Minister's position.
On being asked about the BJP’s performance, Fadnavis hailed himself as modern-day Abhimanyu, who knows how to deal with the tactics of the Opponents.
“Main modern Abhimanyu hun, main chakravyuh todna bhi janta hun, aur jitna bhi janta hun,” he had said.
