Gade, who had been evading capture since early Tuesday morning, was captured around 1:30 AM from his village, Gunat, in Shirur Taluka. When police moved in to capture him, he came out of the sugarcane field where he had been hiding, according to authorities.
A 26-year-old preoperative counselor at a city hospital was reportedly raped by Gade, who already has a criminal record, aboard a Shivshahi bus stopped overnight at the MSRTC Swargate terminal at 5.30 AM on Tuesday.
The Swargate police station is right across from the Swargate bus terminal, one of Pune's biggest state transportation hubs. With 600 bus operations every day, it connects Mumbai, Solapur, Ahilyanagar, Kolhapur, Sangli, and Satara with locations in Karnataka and Goa. It also sees more than 60,000 passengers each day.
