Mumbai Local Train Fare: For all the commuters travelling on mail and express trains with Indian Railways might get a little heavy on the pocket, with the new fare structure, which will be applicable for long-distance trains from December 26. The fare hike is aimed at adjusting train ticket pricing across services.
Under the revised fare structure, a 500-kilometre journey will now cost commuters Rs 10 more per ticket for AC and non-AC coaches. But these revised changes will not be effective for the short-distance journey. General class fares for trips up to a distance of 215 km will not change. For journeys extending 215 km, the general class fares will increase by 1 paise per km.
Meanwhile, AC and non-AC coaches on Mail and Express trains will see an increase of 2 paise per km rise.

Will It Impact Mumbai Local Train?
According to the Indian Railways, the move to increase fares is mainly aimed at generating revenue to meet the increasing expenses of the railways. These rules, however, do not apply to routes under 215 km and suburban trains. This means that for people of Mumbai, the new fares will not be applicable.
How Much Revenue Boost Will Indian Railways Gain From These Revised Fares?
The revised fares will boost the Indian Railways with over Rs 600 crore.
The latest increase follows the Indian Railways’ fare hike announced in July, when ticket prices for non-AC Mail and Express trains were raised by 1 paise per kilometre, while AC class fares went up by 2 paise per kilometre. Daily commuters using the suburban networks were spared from the fare hikes in July as well.
The monthly season tickets were also exempted from the changes. Train fares were last changed on January 1, 2020. However, the new fares did not kick in because of Covid pandemic.
