Vote counting is underway in Maharashtra's 29 municipal corporations with trends suggesting BJP's massive surge across the local bodies ion the state. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which was the focal point in the election saw BJP heading towards a thumping majority. Congress's performance has yet again remained surprisingly disappointing.

However, the grand old party is third in the tally after BJP and Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena, with leads in 171 wards. While the BJP is distantly ahead with lead in 848 wards, Shiv Sena is ahead in 213 wards across the state.

Congress appears to be failing in both Mumbai and Pune. It is leading in five seats in both cities. The situation is no better in Navi Mumbai and Thane. In Thane, it is leading in only two wards, while in Navi Mumbai, it has yet to open its account.

Apart from this, in the trends till 1 pm, the figure is stuck at zero in Pimpri-Chinchwad, Vasai-Virar, Ulhasnagar, Nanded Waghala, Jalgaon, Ahilyanagar, Dhule and Kalyan Dombivali, while the party is expecting only one win in Panvel.

Congress performing good in several areas

Congress is leading in some municipal corporations in Maharashtra. In Bhinwadi Nizampur, Amravati, Chandrapur and Latur, Congress has overtaken other parties and is trying to gain control of these municipal bodies. Congress's performance is slightly better in Mira Bhayander, where it is leading in eight seats. Furthermore, Congress is lagging behind in Nagpur and Kolhapur, trailing in second place. In Nagpur, it is leading in 22 wards, while in Kolhapur, it is leading in 23 wards.

In Mumbai, the BJP is leading on 99 seats out of a total 227. Following it is ally Shiv Sean-UBT with 62 seats. Shiv Sena (Shinde) is leading on 31 seats. Congress is ahead on 13 seats while MNS is heading towards a humiliating defeat with lead in only 9 seats. Ajit Pawar's NCP is leading on 2 seats.
