Maharashtra Local Body Election Result 2025: The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court issued a directive on Tuesday, ordering that the results for all ongoing Nagar Parishad and Nagar Panchayat elections across Maharashtra be declared on December 21.
This directive aims to ensure uniformity and prevent any influence on elections that had been previously postponed in some areas.
Elections For Over 20 Nagar Parishads Deferred To November 20
The State Election Commission (SEC) postponed the polling in 24 local bodies across Maharashtra to December 20 following pending legal proceedings related to certain local bodies.
The decision to reschedule the polling prompted a petition in the High Court, which argued that staggering the result announcements could unfairly influence the outcome of these postponed seats.
In response, the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court directed that the results for all Nagar Parishad and Nagar Panchayat elections must be released simultaneously on December 21, irrespective of when voting takes place.
The Bench further clarified that the exit polls may be published 30 minutes after voting concludes on December 20. The existing Model Code of Conduct will remain in effect until the revised polling date on December 20.
Reacting to the directive, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, “I have been following local body elections for 25 years, but I have never seen elections where polling is deferred a day before voting. This reflects a system’s failure. Measures should be taken to ensure such errors are not repeated in the future.”
Voting For First Phase Of Local Body Elections Underway
Voting is underway for the first phase of the Maharashtra local body elections, covering 264 municipal councils and nagar panchayats. Nearly 1 crore eligible voters will decide the fate of 6,042 seats and 264 council president posts. The polling began at 7:30 AM and will conclude at 5:30 PM.
The main battle is between the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti and the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). The counting of votes, which was initially scheduled for December 3, has been postponed to December 21.
