Maharashtra News: Pune experienced its lowest minimum temperature of the season at 9 degrees Celsius on December 15. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cold wave alert for isolated areas in Pune district, with conditions expected to persist for the next 24 hours. S D Sanap, a senior meteorologist with IMD Pune, clarified that while the alert is specific to isolated areas, no warning has been issued for Pune city itself.

In addition to Pune, cold wave alerts have been issued for seven other districts in central and northern Maharashtra on December 16. IMD data shows that at least 10 stations in Pune district recorded single-digit minimum temperatures on Sunday. Shivajinagar registered the lowest at 9 degrees Celsius, closely followed by Pashan at 9.3 degrees Celsius. The NDA station noted a temperature of 8 degrees Celsius, making it the coldest spot in the district.

Ahmednagar district recorded the lowest temperature in Maharashtra at 6.4 degrees Celsius, marking the season's lowest in the state. Nagpur reported 7 degrees Celsius, the lowest in the Vidarbha region.

Maharashtra District Cold Wave Alert

The cold wave conditions are anticipated to continue for another 24 hours, prompting alerts in eight districts, including Pune, Ahmednagar, Beed, Parbhani, Jalna, Aurangabad, Jalgaon and Gondia.

According to official reports, a stable low-pressure system is affecting weather patterns in Lakshadweep and the Maldives, while cold northerly winds are significantly impacting Maharashtra's climate. This has caused a noticeable drop in temperatures, particularly in central and northern regions, along with isolated areas in Vidarbha.

The IMD's video forecast indicates that most areas in Maharashtra, including Pune, will experience dry weather until December 16. However, light to moderate rainfall is expected in Kolhapur and Sindhudurg districts on December 19.

Warmer Nights Ahead

Anupam Kashyapi, former head of the weather forecasting division at IMD Pune, noted that temperatures are likely to rise in Maharashtra after 24 hours. He attributed this to moisture from the southern Bay of Bengal, which will disrupt the cool northerly winds. As a result, minimum temperatures are expected to increase and Pune city could experience warmer nights for at least a week.
