Maharashtra Weather Update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for coastal regions of Maharashtra, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall. An orange alert has also been issued for several other districts, as continuous rainfall lash parts of the state including Pune and Mumbai.
Talking to reporters, Dr Shubhangi Bhute, head of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai, said, "The conditions are favourable for the advancement of the southwest monsoon, which has already reached the Kerala coast almost a week ahead of its normal onset date of June 1."
"Red alert has been given to South Konkan, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg...We are expecting that we will be having heavy to very heavy rainfall in both the districts...In rest of the region, like Raigad, we have issued an orange alert, and in North Konkan, we have issued yellow alert...In view of the depression, we have given warning to fishermen," she added.

In areas like Raigad, an orange alert has been issued, signaling a notable weather event, though less intense than a red alert. In North Konkan, a yellow alert is in place, indicating milder conditions that are being closely monitored.
Due to a depression in the region, authorities have also issued a warning to fishermen, advising them to stay ashore for safety.
According to the forecast, wind speeds are expected to range between 40 to 50 km/h, potentially causing minor disruptions.
In response, citizens are urged to stay alert and take necessary precautions, particularly in open areas. The alert follows an active pre-monsoon phase across parts of Maharashtra, characterized by rising humidity, thunderstorms, and gusty winds.
Maharashtra Weather Forecast
Maharashtra, particularly the Konkan region, has been experiencing continuous heavy rainfall over the past few days as a developing weather system over the Arabian Sea gathers strength.
An upper-air cyclonic circulation, currently extending up to the mid-tropospheric level off the north Karnataka and Goa coasts, is expected to develop into a low-pressure area by Thursday. According to the IMD, the system is likely to move northward and intensify into a depression by Friday.
Though the system is forming over the Arabian Sea, its primary impact is expected in the north Konkan region, with limited effects in inland areas. “We are in wait-and-watch mode,” an IMD official said.
The weather department has forecast fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching 40–50 km/h, across Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada from May 21 to 25.
