Mumbai Local Trains Update: The residents of Mumbai who used to travel using the suburban services are to get major relief as the Indian Railways is planning to increase the coaches of the existing trains while adding more AC local trains with metro-like automatic doors.
-Additional coaches: The Indian Railways is set to increase the number of coaches per local train from 12 to 15. At present, the Central Railway has only 2 15-car trains, which operate 22 services. Similarly, the Western Railway runs 14 such trains with 211 operations.
Once added, the increased coaches will boost the ridership of the Mumbai local by nearly 33 per cent.
-AC trains: The Indian Railways is also planning to add AC trains. It has cleared the decks for the procurement of 238 AC local trains in total. As per an HT report, Railway Board Chairman and CEO Satish Kumar held detailed meetings with officials from CR and WR on Monday to discuss the implementation plan.
All such trains will come with automatic doors like the Metro trains to keep the air conditioning efficiency intact and ensure passengers' safety.
When will Mumbai Local get these facilities?
The Indian Railways is making efforts to deploy the AC trains and additional coaches on the tracks by the end of this year. Railway Board Chairman and CEO Satish Kumar announced that the operations would begin by the end of 2025.
Meanwhile, the WR has also announced to introduce Kavach, a homegrown automatic safety system developed to automatically control train speed, by the end of 2026. It will replace the Auxiliary Warning System (AWS), which is used as a safety system in trains.
