Mumbai Traffic Advisory: Elphinstone Bridge To Shut: The British-era 125-year-old Elphinstone Bridge connecting Parel and Prabhadevi is scheduled for permanent closure from today, 11:59 on Friday, September 12.

Why Elphinstone Bridge Is Being Closed

The authority is closing the British-era bridge to make way for its demolition and ultimately facilitate the construction of the planned Sewri-Worli Elevated Connector that will connect Bandara-Worli Sea Link and the under-construction coastal road to Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) or Atal Setu.

In its notification on Thursday, the Mumbai traffic police issued a list of diverted roads and alternate routes.

There is a high possibility of traffic chaos as the bridge is situated in the middle of several buildings and offices.

The Elphinstone Bridge passes through two railway stations — Prabhadevi (Western Railway) and Parel (Central Railway). It is used by 500,000-700,000 commuters daily.
