Mumbai News: Mumbai’s delayed Roll-On/Roll-Off (RoRo) service linking Mora Port in Uran with Bhaucha Dhakka is finally moving towards completion, with officials from the Maharashtra Maritime Board announcing a revised target of April 2026.
Work on the project had remained slow for years, but officials say construction has picked up pace over the past few months. The infrastructure, estimated to cost around Rs 75 crore, is now reported to be halfway complete.
What Is RoRo Service?
A RoRo system allows vehicles to be driven directly on to a vessel and off it, using built-in ramps. This avoids crane operations and reduces handling time. Cars, two-wheelers, buses, lorries, trailers and even heavy machinery like excavators can be transported through this method. Since vehicles stay secured in their own space, the risk of damage is also lower.

Why Project Was Delayed
The RoRo plan was first launched in 2018 but faced repeated disruptions. Tender issues, weather-related interruptions and technical measurements slowed the work considerably. Officials say these combined problems pushed the timeline far beyond its original schedule.
Key Construction Challenges
One of the most difficult components has been the Rewas Jetty, which required several design changes. Increasing the jetty’s depth and adding new safety features raised the overall cost by an extra Rs 5 crore. These modifications extended the construction period further and officials believe a few more months will be needed before the jetty structure is ready, as reported by a News 18 report.

Expected Benefits For Commuters
Once operational, the Mora–Bhaucha Dhakka waterway is expected to offer a quicker, safer and more economical travel option for people from Uran and the Raigad region. The service is likely to ease road traffic and provide a reliable alternative for daily movement to Mumbai.
Officials say the project is now progressing steadily, with hopes that the RoRo link will finally become functional by April 2026.
