Mumbai Weather:  Mumbai reported a maximum temperature of 33.8°C on Thursday, even though at least 17 India Meteorological Department (IMD) observatories around Maharashtra recorded sweltering temperatures at or over 40°C. The increase comes at a time when Mumbai has had relatively milder temperatures in the 33-34°C range, despite a yellow advisory for heat being in effect till Wednesday.

Not only have temperatures been lower than in March, but the current decrease coincides with a heatwave that has spread throughout much of Maharashtra and the country. For example, on Thursday, the warmest temperature in Maharashtra was recorded in Akola, with highs reaching 43.5°C.

Why Mumbai Seeing Relatively Cooler Weather?

The early arrival of sea breeze throughout the day and the weakening of an anticyclone system are the main causes of the present temperature decline, according to meteorologists. Shubhangi Bhute, director of IMD Mumbai, told The Indian Express that an anticyclone system in the Arabian Sea was responsible for the city's hot and muggy weather earlier in the month. “Now, this anticyclone system has moved away from the west coast, and furthermore, the sea breeze is setting in during the early hours of the day, resulting in the drop of temperatures,” she added.

Northwesterly winds are now dominating the lower levels over the area, according to the weather bureau's inference charts. Responding to questions about the spell of hot conditions in the rest of the state, Bhute added, “There is a wind discontinuation in the interior pockets of Maharashtra, and thus, it has left the region warmer.”

Till When Will Mumbai Experience Cooler Temperatures?

According to the IMD's forecast bulletin, Mumbai will see a further dip in temperature over the next 2-3 days, followed by a sharp rise in temperature. Maximum temperatures are expected to stay between 32 and 33 degrees Celsius until Sunday, but starting Tuesday of next week, it will rise over 36 degrees.
