Mumbai:  The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to open the newly constructed Carnac Bridge for Mumbaikars on Thursday. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will inaugurate the new Carnac bridge on July 10. The 154-year-old Carnac Bridge is renamed as ‘Sindoor Flyover’ in honour of Operation Sindoor, a military operation launched by India against several terror infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

The Sindoor Railway Flyover, formerly known as Carnac Bridge, is located a short distance from Masjid Bunder railway station and connects D’Mello Road. The flyover connects the east and west of South Mumbai.

Details About The Newly Constructed Sindoor Flyover

The Sindoor flyover is ready to serve Mumbaikars and will be inaugurated tomorrow by Maharashtra’s CM. The construction of the flyover was completed by June 10, 2025. The flyover will be crucial for traffic movement around Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Masjid Bunder, and Mohammad Ali Road areas in South Mumbai.

The newly designed flyover will allow two-way traffic movement and provide a convenient route for commuters. According to PTI, the reconstruction of the 154-year-old bridge was declared unsafe by the Central Railway, resulting in the dismantling of the bridge in August 2022. In a move to maintain connectivity between the east and west in the Masjid Bunder area, BMC reconstructed the bridge based on the approval of the Central Railway.

The Sindoor flyover is 328 metres in length and 70 metres within railway limits. The bridge consists of two 550-metric-ton steel girders, each 70 meters long, 26.5 meters wide, and 10.8 meters high, mounted on RCC piers. The southern girder was launched on October 19, 2024, and the northern girder was launched on January 26 and 30, 2025.

The construction work of the bridge was completed in coordination with BMC’s bridge department. The BMC conducted a load test to check the load capacity, stability and safety of the bridge before opening it for public use. The construction work is completed, and the Sindoor flyover is now ready to serve.
