Nagpur Violence: The Maharashtra Police has registered a sedition case against local politician Fahim Khan, the alleged mastermind behind the March 17 violence, and five others. Fahim Khan, who has already been arrested, has been remanded to judicial custody until March 20.
Nagpur Cyber Crime Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Lohit Matani stated that a sedition case has been filed against six individuals, including Khan, for allegedly supporting and glorifying violence against the police. Authorities believe the number of accused may increase as investigations continue. Some individuals posted comments inciting riots, leading to the charges of sedition.
Objectionable Content Found In 140 Social Media Accounts
The police have scrutinised over 300 social media accounts linked to the riots, finding inflammatory content in at least 140 of them. The process of registering cases against those responsible is underway. According to DCP Matani, Khan edited and circulated a video related to a protest against Aurangzeb, which allegedly fueled the violence.
Authorities have also discovered objectionable content shared from accounts outside Nagpur, some of which expressed support for the riots. Investigators are determining whether these accounts are operated from outside the country. Additionally, Khan’s own social media activity is under scrutiny, with the cybercrime department registering a case over inflammatory material found on his accounts.
Possible Bangladesh Connection Under Probe
So far, four FIRs have been registered in connection with the Nagpur riots, involving over 50 allegations. More cases are expected to follow. The police are also investigating a possible link between the violence and elements from Bangladesh, reported Jagran.com.
A media release from the Maharashtra State Cyber Department on Wednesday night stated that over 140 cases of objectionable content have been identified across Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube. Authorities have issued notices under Section 94 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, to trace the individuals operating these accounts.
Curfew Remains in Some Areas
Nagpur Collector Vipin Itankar informed reporters on Thursday that while normalcy has been restored in most areas, curfew remains in place in certain parts of the city. The government is assessing damages to public and private property, promising compensation to affected individuals. Initial estimates indicate damage to 50-60 two-wheelers, 10-15 four-wheelers, cranes and 5-10 houses. A survey team is currently documenting losses.
