Three individuals, including two toddlers, were killed and six others injured after a dumper truck ran over them while they were sleeping on a footpath in Pune’s Wagholi Chowk area early Sunday morning. The incident occurred near Kesnand Phata around 12:30 am, police said.

Himmat Jadhav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 4), stated that the dumper driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time. The driver was arrested under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act and the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and further investigation is underway, the official said.

The victims were migrant workers from Amravati who had come to Pune for work. Those killed were identified as Vaibhav Ritesh Pawar (1-year-old), Ritesh Vaibhav Pawar (2-year-old) and Rinesh Nitesh Pawar. Police said a team immediately rushed to the scene and transported the injured to Sassoon Hospital for treatment.

In a related incident, a four-year-old boy was fatally struck by a speeding car in Mumbai’s Wadala area on Sunday. The car, driven by 19-year-old Bhushan Gole, hit the child near Ambedkar College while reversing.

The victim, identified as Ayush Laxman Kinvade, lived on the footpath with his family, who rely on daily wage labour for survival. The driver, a resident of Vile Parle, has been arrested under relevant sections of the BNS and further investigation is underway.
