Foetus and multiple body parts of infants (vestigial organs) were discovered in a garbage dump in Daund, Pune district, on Tuesday, prompting police to register a case against unidentified persons. The remains, which were reportedly biomedical waste, had been discarded in glass and plastic containers near a petrol pump at Borawake Chowk, officials said.
Authorities found ten containers filled with biomedical waste at the site. Among them, one contained a fetus, while others had vestigial organs and body parts. The disturbing discovery was made in the morning, raising concerns over illegal biomedical waste disposal.
According to Pune District Superintendent of Police (DSP) Pankaj Deshmukh, a nursing home was located near the dumping site. Preliminary investigations indicated that the remains might be linked to the facility's biomedical waste disposal practices, reported India Today.

Inspector Gopal Pawar of Daund police station added that the foetus and organs were disposed of in ten separate containers in a wrongful manner. "We found one foetus and some vestigial organs. All these were disposed of in 10 different glass containers in a wrongful manner at a garbage site located at the Borawake chowk in Daund," the official said.
Following the discovery, police registered an offence under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 89 (causing miscarriage without a woman’s consent), Section 90 (death caused by an act done with intent to cause miscarriage), Section 271 (negligently spreading a disease dangerous to life) and Section 272 (malignant act likely to spread infection of a disease dangerous to life).
Officials have launched an investigation to trace those responsible for the unlawful disposal of biomedical waste.
