Pune News: A 30-year-old parking attendant working at a well-known bar and restaurant in Kalyaninagar died on Sunday afternoon after being hit by a car allegedly driven by a drunk IT employee. The incident took place around 3 PM outside the establishment.

Police identified the deceased as Satyendar Mandal, a resident of Wadgaon Sheri who originally belonged to Bihar. The accused driver, Pratapsinh Dhaygude, aged 50, lives in Dhanori and works with an IT firm in Yerawada. He was arrested soon after the accident.

According to Yerawada police, Dhaygude arrived at the restaurant already under the influence of alcohol. Senior inspector Anjum Bagwan said staff refused to serve him after noticing his condition. “He walked out angrily, got into his car, reversed and attempted to take a right turn. He lost control, hit the valet attendant and then crashed into a wall,” Bagwan said. The car, a Volkswagen Jetta, has been seized.

The Times Of India report cited Police as stating that Dhaygude repeatedly insisted that he was “a good man, not a bad man” when asked where he had consumed liquor earlier. Officers detained him and sent him for a medical examination at Sassoon Hospital, which confirmed he was driving under the influence.

The restaurant issued a statement later in the day, expressing grief over Mandal’s death and confirming that it is cooperating with the investigation. “We are extremely saddened by the loss of our colleague. An FIR has been registered, and we are assisting police to ensure justice,” the statement read.

The crash site is barely 100 metres from the location of another high-profile drunk driving case. In May 2024, a 17-year-old boy driving a Porsche fatally hit two techies, Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, in the same area.

Police said further inquiry is under way.
