In a shocking incident, a tourist fell into the Kalu waterfall in the Khireshwar area of Junnar on Friday afternoon after he slipped into a gorge at the first tier of the five-stage waterfall where Kalu River falls into the deep valley.

The tourist had travelled to Pune with a group from Hyderabad. According to a report by Pune Pulse based on a witness account, the man lost his balance while crossing the Kalu river and was swept away by the strong current.

He was stranded on a narrow ledge, some hundred feet below, with heavy water flow nearby. A group of local residents rushed to the rescue immediately.

Having no rescue equipment at hand, they tied several dupattas and scarves and created a makeshift rope, which was thrown to the stranded tourist.

Later, the tourist was pulled to safety just in time. The video of the incident surfaced on social media and went viral soon thereafter. The makeshift rope of dupattas and the dramatic rescue drew praise from the local residents.

Meanwhile, concerns have also been raised over the lack of safety grills and other infrastructure at the popular tourist site.
