Pune weather: Pune is witnessing its trademark “pink cold” intensify, with temperatures dipping to 13.4 degrees Celsius on Tuesday morning, one of the lowest readings this season. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the city will face even colder nights in the coming days as winter sets in earlier than expected.

According to IMD scientists, clear skies, dry air, and cold northerly winds from the Himalayan region have contributed to the drop in temperature. “Temperatures are likely to decrease further as the wind pattern stays consistent,” said S.D. Sanap, senior scientist at IMD Pune.

Residents across the city have begun pulling out their woollens, with chilly mornings and evenings now part of daily life. Over the past four days, Pune’s minimum temperature has fallen by nearly six degrees compared to last week. Locals have started embracing the winter mood- from early morning walks in sweaters to late-night chai breaks at roadside stalls.

The IMD’s five-day forecast indicates clear skies and dry weather, which could lead to further cooling. The Indian Express report cited Former IMD weather forecasting head Dr Anupam Kashyapi as stating that, cool winds travelling from Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are pushing through central India and influencing Pune’s climate.

Dr Kashyapi also advised residents, especially children and the elderly, to take precautions against cold-related illnesses. He noted that the present conditions would benefit farmers cultivating short-term crops like spinach, methi, lentils, and peas.

Meanwhile, other parts of Maharashtra, including Ahmednagar, Kolhapur, Malegaon, and Mahabaleshwar, have also reported below-average minimum temperatures, signalling the steady arrival of winter across the state.

With the IMD predicting an extended spell of cold and dry weather, Punekars can expect more sweater days and chilly evenings in the week ahead.
