Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced on Sunday that efforts are in progress to begin the trial run of the highly anticipated Metro service in Thane next month, with full-scale operations expected to start by December this year.

"Efforts are on to conduct the trial run of the Metro in Thane in September. After that, we are working on launching the actual services by December. The work is progressing on a war-footing," he said.

He also mentioned that preliminary work on Thane's internal Metro network has already commenced. "This will be linked to the main Metro lines to provide integrated transport facilities," he added.

He said the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) will benefit from seamless Metro connectivity once ongoing projects are completed, offering last-mile and end-to-end commute solutions. He was speaking to reporters after inaugurating the Thane Varsha Marathon.

Highlighting key infrastructure developments, Shinde said the freeway extension from Mumbai to Thane would help reduce traffic congestion and divert logistics movement to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), easing pressure on the city. He added that instructions have been given to the collector, municipal commissioner, and police chief to make Thane traffic-free.

“They are working towards it, and soon Thane city will be free from traffic jams,” Shinde asserted.

The earlier Detailed Project Report (DPR) proposed 22 metro stations over a stretch of 29 kilometers. It will also link to Mumbai Metro Line-5 (Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan) at Majiwada junction.
