Amavasya October 2023: In Hinduism, the new moon night is known as Amavasya. It is the first night of the lunar month's first quarter. Since the moon is invisible during this day, Amavasya is also known as no moon night. In Hinduism, Amavasya is very important. Many Hindus choose this day to give an offering (tarpan) to their deceased ancestors. The term 'Amavasya' is widely used in all Indian regional languages. The fortnight beginning with Amavasya is known as the Shukla paksha (bright half of the month). The Mahalya Amvasya falling in the Ashwin month (September - October) are considered sacred.

Amavasya October 2023: Mahalaya Amavasya Significance

Mahalaya Amavasya is dedicated to the ancestors or Pitras. According to the South Indian calendar, it is observed on the day of Amavasya, which is the new moon day of the month of Bhadrapada. Sarvapitri Amavasya, Moksha Amavasya, and Pitru Amavasya are other names for it. Mahalaya Amavasya is the final day of the Shraddh rituals, which take place over a 15-day period. This day is particularly sacred in Hinduism because the Shradh of any deceased member of the family can be done on this day, regardless of the tithi. The Mahalaya Amavasya tarpan ritual is performed to receive the heavenly blessings of the ancestors for a peaceful and happy life.

People who perform the Shradh ceremony also receive the blessings of Lord Yamraj, the Lord of Death, which protects their family from all forms of bad and negative energy. According to Hindu scriptures, devotees who were unable to execute the Shradh of their ancestors within 15 days of their death, or whose death date (tithi) is unknown, can conduct the Tarpan on the day of Mahalaya Amavasya 2023. It is claimed that on this day, the devotees' ancestors visit their houses and bless them for carrying out Shradh rituals for them.
