Bhai Dooj 2024: Legends Behind This Sacred Festival As Per Hinduism

According to Hindu legends, Bhai Dooj commemorates Lord Krishna's visit to his sister Subhadra after defeating the demon Narkasur. Subhadra warmly welcomed Krishna with an aarti and applied a tilak on his forehead, symbolising her love and blessings. However, another renowned mythological story behind Bhai Dooj revolves around the Sun God Surya's twins, Yama and Varni. Their mother, Samjna, left them due to the Sun's intense heat, leaving behind her shadow, Chhaya. Chhaya ill-treated Yama and Varni, leading them to separate paths - Varni became the river Yamuna, while Yama became the god of death.

Years later, Yama reunited with Varni, who prepared a grand feast to welcome her brother. Before departing, Yama asked Varni to make a wish. Selfless Varni wished that every brother would visit their sister on this day (the second day after Diwali) and receive their sister's prayers for happiness. Yama granted her wish, and thus, Bhai Dooj was born. This heartwarming festival celebrates the unconditional bond between siblings, where sisters pray for their brothers' well-being and brothers shower their sisters with love and gifts.
