From a scientific standpoint, the neem and turmeric have germicidal properties that do not allow diseases and mosquitoes to enter the house. This practice serves as a way of keeping our household holy and pure.

The tradition of performing the Kappu Kattu as a part of the Pongal celebration is very old. In the past, when the Pongal festival used to come, the weather used to change, and the possibilities of falling sick were at their peak. Our ancestors were aware of the fact that the neem tree, turmeric, and Avaram flowers had germ-fighting capabilities. That is why they used to make it a ritual to perform this at everyone’s main entrance, and now this tradition is being performed as it serves as some form of protection.

Other Significant Rituals Associated With Bhogi 2026

Along with the tying of Kappu Kattu, several unique rituals are performed. The people first light a holy fire known as Bhogi Mantalu at the break of dawn by burning old household articles, which signifies the beginning of something new. There is a special ritual for children also, known as Bhogi Pallu, where the children are showered with berries and coins to get rid of the evil spirits. Beautiful rangoli or kolam designs are made outside the homes, and in the evening, snacks prepared with groundnuts, sesame seeds, and jaggery are relished by the people.
