Chhath Puja 2024 Day 3: Sandhya Arghya Significance

In Hinduism, Sandhya Arghya is a pivotal ritual in Chhath Puja, where devotees offer evening prayers to the setting sun. This sacred ceremony acknowledges the sun's life-giving energy and expresses gratitude for its sustenance. By performing Sandhya Arghya, believers purify their minds, bodies, and souls, fostering spiritual growth and harmony with nature. The ritual involves standing in waist-deep water, facing the sun, and offering arghya (water and prayers) to the divine.

Chhath Puja 2024 Day 3: Sandhya Arghya Rituals

During Sandhya Arghya, devotees gather at riverbanks, ponds, or other water bodies before sunset. They wear new clothes and carry traditional offerings like fruits, flowers, and thekua. The ritual begins with devotees standing in waist-deep water, facing the setting sun. They offer arghya to the sun, accompanied by chanting and hymns. The offerings are usually made in bamboo baskets or plates, symbolising the connection between nature and the divine.

The ritual involves three key steps: offering arghya to the sun, worshipping Chhathi Maiya (the goddess of the sixth day), and seeking blessings from the sun. Devotees then return home to share prasad (blessed food) with family and friends. The evening prayer is followed by a rigorous fast, broken only after the morning arghya (Usha Arghya) the next day. Throughout the ritual, devotees maintain purity, self-discipline, and devotion, seeking spiritual growth, prosperity, and harmony.
