Lord Chitragupta was born from Lord Brahma’s body. He carries a pen and inkpot in his hand. Since he was born from Lord Brahma's body, he was known as Kayastha while on Earth, he is known as as Chitragupt. It is believed that Lord Chitragupta carries all the records of the good and bad deeds of a person. After the soul of the person reaches Yamlog post his/her death, Lord Chitragupta unveils the records of all of the person’s deeds to Lord Yamaraj. In order to appease Lord Chitragupta and express apologies for the known as unknown transgressions, devotees observe the Chitragupta Puja and venerate Lord Chitragupta. Since the Kayastha community believes itself to be the predecessors of Chitragupta, they observe special rites and pujas in honour of Chitragupta Puja Day.
