Dussehra 2025: Significance And Rituals

Known as the festival of victory, Dussehra commemorates Lord Rama's triumph over Ravana and his conquest of Lanka. After a 20-lunar-cycle journey, Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya, ending 14 years of exile and freeing his wife Devi Sita from her abduction by Ravana. This victory symbolises good over evil and is celebrated with great fervour. The festival holds immense significance, marking Rama's victory and the triumph of good over evil.

Before battling Ravana, Lord Rama sought blessings from Goddess Aparajita, worshipped for her invincibility. Traditionally, her worship was limited to Kshatriyas and kings. Aparajita's significance lies in her role as a deity of the odyssey and protection. Her blessings were crucial for Rama's victory, and her worship continues to be an integral part of Dussehra celebrations.

Shammi Tree is also worshipped on the day of Vijaya Dashami or Dussehra, as Arjuna hid his weapons within it. In southern India, the tree is worshipped as a symbol of goodwill, known as Shami Puja, Banni Puja, or Jammi Puja. This ritual is an integral part of Dussehra celebrations in the region.

Dussehra is celebrated differently across India. In northern and western India, the effigies of Ravana, Meghnada and Kumbhkarna are burnt to commemorate the festivities. In Kolkata, Vijaya Dashami is linked with Durga Puja, while in southern India, this occasion marks the end of the Golu festival.
