Ganga Dussehra 2025: Significance

In Sanatan Dharma (the eternal way of life, a synonym for Hinduism), Ganga Dussehra has profound spiritual significance as it is believed that on this day, Mother Ganga chose to come to Earth. As per the legends, whoever worships her with pure devotion on this day gets showered by her celestial blessing. Devotees then take a dip in the holy Ganges, keeping fasts and performing Aarti with deep faith. According to our scriptures, a dip in the holy river on this sacred day absolves one of all sins and leads one towards liberation. It’s a time when spiritual practices are believed to be particularly powerful, allowing people to reconnect with love, devotion and inner tranquillity.

In Ganga Dussehra, charity holds a special importance. Providing food, clothing or basic necessities to people in need is thought to confer countless times the spiritual merit. The day’s Sanskrit name ‘Dussehra’ indicates the purging of ten types of sins, washed away by the divine touch of Mother Ganga. From speech and action to commitment and resolve, these ten sins are claimed to be covered by heartfelt prayer and ritual purification, respectively.

Ganga Dussehra 2025: Rituals

On Ganga Dussehra, numerous worshippers visit places like Prayagraj, Rishikesh, Varanasi and Haridwar to dip in the sacred Ganges and meditate at its riverbanks. At dusk, a captivating ritual comes to life as priests and worshippers partake in Ganga Aarti, setting lighted leaf-vessels brimming with blossoms and dancing luminaries afloat in dreamlike waters. Most pay tribute to their forefathers through pitru puja, praying for their souls’ peace and blessing. It is a tradition to present ten of each item – flowers, fruits or betel leaves while praying to the Ganges, and take ten sacred dips in the river, representing the eradication of ten kinds of sins.

Goddess Yamuna is also worshipped on this sacred occasion. In towns such as Mathura, Vrindavan and Bateshwar, thousands of locals and pilgrims take to the riverbanks to take a sacred dip in the waters of the Yamuna and celebrate with cooling fruits like watermelon and cucumber. To mark the occasion, kite-flying events fill the skies across the world, bringing colour and festivity to the sacred observance. Devotees donate refreshing drinks like lassi, sharbat and shikanji.
