Guru Purnima is a cherished festival celebrated by Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains to honour their spiritual guides and academic teachers. It’s a day dedicated to expressing gratitude for the wisdom and support received from mentors. Observed mainly in India, Nepal, and Bhutan, it’s also regarded as a spiritually charged day for meditation and yogic practices. A Guru is seen as a teacher, friend, and protector who leads seekers towards self-realisation and divine understanding.

The festival is celebrated in honour of Maharshi Veda Vyasa, who was born on Ashadha Purnima. He is remembered as the Guru of all Gurus, not only for composing the Mahabharata but also for systematising the Vedas into Rigveda, Samveda, Yajurveda and Atharvaveda. He authored 18 Puranas and other sacred texts, offering timeless teachings on righteous living. His literary contributions make him one of the greatest spiritual scholars in Indian history and he is worshipped as Vyasa Dev on this day.

In Yogic culture, Lord Shiva is honoured as Adiyogi, the first Guru who imparted the science of Yoga to the seven sages - the Saptarishis. Similarly, Gautam Buddha gave his first sermon on this day at Sarnath. In astrology, Jupiter - known as Guru, symbolises wisdom and learning. Hence, many also worship Lord Jupiter during Guru Purnima to seek knowledge, clarity and spiritual blessings.
