Hindu New Year 2024: Every year on January 1, the English calendar marks the start of a new year. Still, not every culture or region observes the same date for the start of the new year. Since April marks the conclusion of the harvest festival, people in Cambodia celebrate the new year in this month. Similar to this, on the first day (Pratipada Tithi) of the Shukla Paksha of the Chaitra Month, Hindu people in India celebrate the Hindu New Year. It often occurs in April or March. The Hindu New Year is also known as Vikram Samvat. Let us know when will Hindu New Year be commemorated this year.

Hind New Year 2024: When Will Vikram Samvat 2081 Start? 

This year, the Hindu New Year, i.e., Vikram Samvat 2081 is marked on 9th April 2024, Tuesday. In North India, the harvest festival of Baisakhi falls on the same day as the Hindu New Year. South India is referred to as "Ugadi" or "Puthandu," whereas Odisha is known as "Maha Vishubha Sankranti." In Maharashtra, it is known as Gudi Padwa. The day following Diwali is when Gujarat celebrates New Year's, or Bestu Varas.

Notably, astrological calculations cause the Hindu festival's date to vary with every new year. Hindu calendars are lunisolar, meaning they are based on the cycles of the moon and are regularly altered to coincide with the solar year.

Hindu New Year 2024: Significance Of Vikram Samvat Or New Year As Per Hindu Calendar 

The Hindu Lunar Calendar, also known as the Panchanga or Almanack, determines how the Hindu New Year is observed. It is believed that the current Vikram Samvat period started around 57 BC. On this day, too, an agricultural harvest comes to an end and a new one begins. Therefore, the planting and harvesting of crops is an aspect of this event. The sun appears to be somewhat above the equator's and the meridians' junction on this particular day. In addition, this day signifies the start of the Vasanta Ritu or spring season.

The Brahma Purana states that on the day of the Hindu New Year, Lord Brahma reconstructed the whole universe following the previous Pralaya, also known as the Great Deluge. Thus, on this day, time was established again.
