Holi 2024: The colourful festival "Holi" is one of the most popular Hindu festivals. This vivid festival is celebrated with utmost zeal and enthusiasm among Hindus. The festivities of Holi begin on the Falgun Purnima (full moon day). This year, Holi celebrations will take place on 25th March 2024. The colourful festival will undoubtedly be of utmost importance for the newlyweds, especially the bride who is going to celebrate the festival of colours with her in-laws. However, according to Hindu beliefs, a new bride must not celebrate her first Holi after marriage in her Sasural (in-laws'home), but in her Mayika (paternal home) only. Let us know the religious perspective behind this custom.

Holi 2024: Why Newly Married Woman Can Not Celebrate Holi In Her Sasural?

- It is considered inauspicious for a girl to celebrate her first Holi after marriage in her Sasural as per religious beliefs. It is believed that if the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law view the Holika Dahan together then it causes strain in their relationship. Rather than affection, the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law's relationship revolves around conflict.

- There is strife in the home, and interpersonal connections also suffer. In addition, there is a belief that since marriage fosters love, the newly-wed Man must also celebrate his first Holi with his spouse at her mother's house. This fosters love between the couple and helps in maintaining harmony in their relationship.

- It is believed that if a newly-wed woman celebrates her first Holi at her Mayika then she gives birth to a healthy child. In many cultures, it is also believed that an expectant mother should also not celebrate Holi at her in-laws' house since it is not considered auspicious for the soon-to-arrive child.

Additional Cultural Perspectives

The girl feels a little more liberated and may enjoy Holi with her husband without restriction at the maternal house, which is another reason for the custom of playing the first Holi in the girl's Mayika. In addition, there are other relatives, such as the father-in-law and mother-in-law at the in-laws' home, so it's understandable to feel uneasy around them.

Along with this, the son-in-law's bond with the girl's entire maternal family gets stronger. A girl's reluctance towards her in-laws is comparable to a male's hesitation towards the girl's parents; in such a scenario, the girl's hesitation is eliminated when her husband plays Holi with her at her parents' house.
