The Karni Mata Mandir is the most popular tourist destination in Bikaner. The temple is devoted to Karni Mata, who the locals consider to be a manifestation of Hinduism's protecting Mother Goddess, Durga. Karni Mata was a Hindu warrior guru who belonged to the Charan caste. Karni Mata led an austere life, was much respected by the community and attracted a large following. Let us check out some interesting facts about this mandir.
Karni Mata Temple Bikaner: Interesting Facts About This Mandir
- The Karni Mata Mandir in Bikaner is well-known for housing over 25,000 rats that roam freely throughout the complex of temples, rather than for its geographical position or architectural style. These creatures are visible arising from cracks in the walls and flooring, frequently crossing the feet of guests and worshippers.
- In fact, eating food that these rats have nibbled on is considered a religious ritual here. In addition to travelling from all over India and the world to see this incredible spectacle, visitors often bring milk, candies, and other offerings for these revered creatures.

- White rats are particularly revered above all other rats since it is believed that they are the avatars of Karni Mata and her sons. Visitors make great attempts to entice them out by often presenting sweets. However, even accidentally harming or killing a rat is a grave sin at this shrine. As a kind of atonement, those who commit this act will have to replace the dead rat with a gold one.
- In addition to its own traditions, the Karni Mata temple is linked to several fascinating tales. The story of Laxman, Karni Mata's stepson, is the most often told of these stories. Laxman drowns in the Kapil Sarovar in Kolayat Tehsil one day while trying to sip the water from it. Karni Mata, who was devastated by her son's passing, prayed fervently to Yama, the Hindu god of death, but he first rejected her plea to revive her son. However, because of her anguish and determination, he agreed to her requests and brought back not only Laxman but all of Karni Mata's sons as rats.
