Kedara Gowri Vratham 2025: Significance

According to Hindu legends, Goddess Parvati undertook a rigorous fast to attain the same divine status as Shiva. Feeling disrespected, Parvati had left heaven and sought refuge with Sage Gautama, who advised her to perform the Kedara Gowri Vratham to unite with Shiva. With unwavering dedication, Devi Parvati observed the fast, and pleased with her devotion, Lord Shiva granted her a part of his body, manifesting as Ardhanarishvara. This sacred ritual, typically observed on Amavasya during Diwali, is particularly popular in South India. It is believed that observing the Kedara Gowri Vratam bestows Shiva's blessings, fulfilling devotees' desires and granting spiritual growth.

Kedara Gowri Vratham 2025: Rituals

Devotees begin the day with a pre-sunrise bath and prayers to Lord Shiva, seeking prosperity and wealth. They set up a 'Kalash' filled with water, representing Lord Kedareswara, and create a small mandap over it. A special Vratham thread with 21 fibres and 21 knots is also prepared, wrapped around the Kalash. They worship the Kalash with sandalwood paste, rice, flowers and fruits, laying the foundation for a sacred and meaningful puja.

Devotees prepare 21 different types of 'Naivedyam' offerings, such as coconut, bananas and appam, to present to Lord Shiva. Fasting is a crucial part of the Vratham, with some devotees observing a 21-day fast. Others opt for a single-day fast, abstaining from food and water until the puja is complete. After the puja, only one meal is allowed, while partial fasting is an option for those who cannot keep a full fast.

Thereafter, the devotees recite mantras, shlokas and prayers dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, such as "Om Namah Shivaya" and Gauri Ashtottara Shatanamavali.
