Magh Purnima 2025: Significance

According to Hindu texts, bathing in the holy river on Maghi Purnima is considered highly auspicious. This sacred ritual is believed to wash away past and present sins. After the bath, devotees give alms, seeking spiritual purification. On this day, Lord Vishnu and Lord Hanuman are worshipped, and devotees seek their blessings. It is believed that the wishes of those who worship these deities are fulfilled.

Magh Purnima is considered a sacred day for spiritual and religious rituals. Mythology suggests that during this month, deities descend from heaven to earth, residing on the banks of the Ganges. This auspicious occasion is marked by the 'Magh Mela' and 'Kumbh Mela', where hundreds of devotees gather to take a holy dip in the Ganges, basking in the sacred spirit of Maghi Purnima.

Magh Purnima 2025: Rituals

On Magha Purnima, devotees perform various rituals, including bathing, charity, homa, fasting, and chanting. Lord Vishnu is worshipped on this day, and devotees offer Shradh-tarpan and donate to the poor. To observe the Maghi Purnima Vrat, one should take a holy bath before sunrise and offer arghya to the Sun God while reciting the Surya Mantra.

After bathing, devotees worship Lord Madhusudan/Lord Krishna and take a vow of fasting. During the day, they feed and donate to poor people and Brahmins, offering dakshina as well. Sesame and black sesame seeds are specifically donated to charity, and havan is performed using black sesame seeds to honour ancestors.

Devotees chant the Gayatri Mantra or 'Om Namo Narayan' mantra 108 times continuously, seeking spiritual growth and blessings. By following these rituals, devotees observe the Maghi Purnima Vrat and seek to purify their souls and connect with the divine.
