Nag Panchami 2024: Significance Of This Sacred Festival

Among these, the festival of Nag Panchami holds great importance, celebrated on the fifth day following the new moon in the month of Shravan, and in some regions, on the fifth day after the full moon in Ashadh. In Punjab, the festival is referred to as Guga-Navami, where devotees create a massive serpent effigy from flour and offer worship. Unmarried women observe a fast and perform Nag Panchami Vrat and Puja, offering food to snakes, believing it will bring them suitable husbands and protection from snake bites.

Observing a fast on this day is a significant aspect of the festivities, as devotees seek to appease the Snake God and invoke divine blessings. By offering prayers to the serpent deities, individuals can overcome their deep-seated fears of snakes and serpents, while also seeking protection from various evils and malevolent forces.
To maximise the benefits of this sacred day, devotees are advised to refrain from digging the earth for farming or any other purpose, as this is considered taboo. Instead, they offer worship to ant hills and snake pits by pouring milk, a symbol of purity and reverence.
