Onam 2024: Thiruvonum Significance

Thiruvonum is the most special day of Onam, and it has a deep spiritual meaning. It's the day when King Mahabali, a kind and fair ruler, comes back to visit his people. This day shows that good will always win over bad. Mahabali's return reminds us to live a good life and be kind to others. It's also a time to remember that life is short and we should make the most of it. On Thiruvonum, people worship Lord Vishnu, who is like a parent to the universe. They pray and offer flowers to connect with something bigger than themselves. This day is like a spiritual journey that helps people find their way and be better versions of themselves. Onam 2024: Thiruvonum Rituals

1. Pookalam

People create intricate floral carpets, called Pookalam, at home entrances to welcome King Mahabali. Pookalam is created using vibrant flowers like marigolds, roses, and jasmine to create beautiful designs. This ritual symbolises the joy and happiness of Mahabali's return.

2. Traditional Worship (Puja)

Devotees also perform traditional worship, Puja, at home or temples to honour Lord Vishnu and King Mahabali. This ritual helps to connect with the divine and seek spiritual growth.

3. Thiruvonam Kudi

On the day of Thiruvonum, people also take a special bath, Thiruvonam Kudi, early in the morning to purify the body and mind. They wear new clothes and apply sandalwood paste. This ritual prepares devotees for the day's celebrations.

4. Traditional Feast (Sadya)

On Thiruvonum, people also prepare a traditional feast, Sadya, with 26 dishes, including sweet and savoury items. Serve the feast on banana leaves to recreate the traditional Kerala experience. This ritual brings families and friends together to share love and laughter.

5. Thiruvonam Vilakku

People participate in an evening procession, Thiruvonam Vilakku with lit lamps, traditional music, and dance performances. This ritual symbolises the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil, marking the grand finale of Onam celebrations.
